Research

Across scales and disciplines

The mission of the Environmental Systems Lab is to augment design decision-making using simulation and data-driven workflows to reach better design solutions more quickly. The lab works across scales and disciplines and bridges computation, environmental simulation, systems engineering, architecture, and urbanism to enhance the sustainability and quality of our built environment. Research outcomes are widely used software tools and metrics that have significantly lowered the barrier of entry to advanced building energy modeling and facilitate integrative design applications. Two recent examples, Urbano.io and Eddy3D, allow modelers to investigate the nexus of architecture, energy use, microclimate, mobility, resilience, health, and well-being by leveraging computational design methods, big urban data sets, and artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.
